Jerry Ray Gates, age 76, of Kokomo, IN and formerly of the Walnut Grove, IN area, died Sunday with his family at his side at St. Vincent Hospice at Indianapolis, IN.

He was born September 20, 1940 at Noblesville, IN to Robert Lewis Gates and Delores Jean (Hicks) Gates. He was raised in the White River Township area and graduated from Walnut Grove High School with the Class of 1959. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

Jerry had worked for almost 35 years at Chrysler Corporation at Kokomo, IN, retiring in 1998 where he was a member of UAW Local 685. Additional memberships include Macedonia Christian Church, Howard County Veterans Association, Midwest Faceters Association and Indiana Beekeepers Association. He also enjoyed gardening and beekeeping.

After retirement, Jerry became a lapidary artist, custom making jewelry for stores and various art fairs as well as personal sales. For all his accomplishments, he was best known for being a master joke teller. And his family attests to the fact he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He married Leann Marie (Harrell) Gates on July 29, 1967. She survives him. Also surviving are two sons: Todd (Lori Middleton) Gates of Kokomo, IN, and Scott (Arika) Gates of Tipton, IN, brothers: John (Debbie) Leonard of Noblesville, IN, James (Anne) Leonard of Cicero, IN, a sister: Linda (Raylu) Lefter of Greenfield, IN, grandchildren: Brandon Gates, James Gates, Wyatt Gates, Randy Middleton and Noah Middleton.

Preceding him in death are his father and mother, his step-mother: Vivian Gates, step-father: John Leonard, and a granddaughter: Madelyn Gates.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. at Macedonia Christian Church with Pastor John Piotrowicz officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until the time of the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Macedonia Christian Church.
